The Soul – Some quotes

“Stillness is vital to the world of the soul”

“The recovery of soul in our times is vital in healing our disconnection”

John O’Donohue

“This is the first, wildest and wisest thing I know…. That the soul exists, and that it is built entirely out of attentiveness”

Mary Oliver

“By ‘soul’ I mean the vital, mysterious and wild core of our individual selves, an essence unique to each person, qualities found in layers of the self, much deeper than our personalities”

“Soul is what is most wild and natural within us”

Bill Plotkin

Soul as “the one life you can call your own”

Or “shape that waits in the seed of you to grow and spread its branches against a future sky”

David Whyte

“The soul wants to keep us rooted in the ground of our own being, resisting the tendency of other faculties, like the intellect and ego, to uproot us from who we are.

The soul wants to keep us connected to the community in which we find life, for it understands that relationships are necessary if we are to thrive.

The soul wants to tell us the truth about ourselves, our world, and the relation between the two, whether that truth is easy or hard to hear.

The soul wants to give us life, and wants us to pass that gift along,

To become life-givers in a world that deals too much death.”

“Like a wild animal, the soul is tough, resilient, resourceful, savvy and self-sufficient: it knows how to survive in hard places.  I learned about these qualities during my bouts with depression.  In that deadly darkness, the faculties I had always depended on collapsed.  My intellect was useless; my emotions were dead; my will was impotent; my ego was shattered. But from time to time, deep in the thickets of my inner wilderness, I could sense the presence of something that knew how to stay alive even when the rest of me wanted to die.  That something was my tough and tenacious soul.”

Palmer J. Parker

Even the universe has a soul, and we call that soul ‘spirit’.

What is ‘soul’ for you….?

For me my soul is the part of me which was around before I was conceived, and will move on when my body dies. It is strong and giant like, resilient and determined, soft and vulnerable, shy and cute.

The main way to create a safe place for my soul to show itself is in being still in a remote place outdoors, the wilder the better. It shows up when I am not expecting anything. Other ways which facilitate its presence include music, transdance, and being in a group of like minded people where there is trust and acceptance.
