Ancestor Retreat 2017

Accessing the gifts and healing the wounds of our inheritance

Tuesday evening August 8th to Sunday, 1pm, August 13th, 2017

Humanity is built on the bedrock of our desire to belong. That we are part of a particular family and family tree is an indisputable fact. How we are in this world, how we live, how we react to the events which life presents us with, and rear our children, is no doubt deeply influenced by the family and tradition we come from.

This retreat which takes place in the magical and historical landscape of north Sligo seeks to explore our ancestral inheritance, and inform us as to how the lives of those who have gone before us shape the way we live today. It will help us find our place in our ancestral family.

Research indicates that what is not felt is transmitted to the next generation. While parents and relatives want to pass on health and positive values to children, unbeknown to themselves they can be haunted by the burdens and mistakes of their ancestors. Healing our wounds from the past assists us in passing on health to the next generation and helping us to discover our particular gift to this world.

This five day retreat will facilitate us in becoming aware of how our particular ancestral line affects our living. We will explore the way in which our ancestors inform our emotions and how we view ourselves. Often our depression, anxiety or failure to connect in relationship can be traced to events in our distant past. Deep in our very bones lie the stories from migrations, tragedies, loves, and losses.

Unwrapping the gifts passed on to us from the generations is exciting and empowering. These few days will present us with an opportunity to tap into their celebrations, music, storytelling, and courage. As the retreat unfolds, we will be in awe at the unexpected awareness which promises to come our way as we devote this time to be with our family tree, marvelling at our new-found allies,

It is not essential that participants have an extensive knowledge of their genealogy though it will help. The focus will be on a different way of knowing, entering the home of our ancestors as we wander the Irish landscape , listening with the eyes and ears of our heart, tuning into the energy of place with sharpened senses and boundless imagination.

We will engage with the ancestral images in story, movement and ritual and allow our deep imagination lead us into what our bodies know already. Interwoven with these outdoor en-counters we will avail of the warmth of a turf fire in the comfort of a hundred year old cottage built beside the ruins of a megalithic tomb and immersed in deep listening we will recount the highlights of our day’s wander. Poetry, council, deep imagery, ritual, and dream work will fur-ther enhance our growing awareness. Perhaps our greatest gift to the next generation and this troubled world, will be our willingness to heal.

In the Celtic tradition there is a great sense that the dead do not live far away. In Ireland there are always plac-es, fields and old ruins where the ghosts of people were seen. That kind of folk memory recognises that people who have lived in a place, even when they move to invisible form, somehow remain attached to that place. John O’Donoghue

Meister Eckhart was once asked, “Where does the soul go when the person dies? “He said ,“No place. Where else would the soul be going? It can be nowhere other than here?”

About Peter Devlin

Peter Devlin lives in Co. Sligo with his wife and three children. He works as a psycho-therapist mainly in the outdoors, as a clini-cal and pastoral supervisor. His passion is helping people get in touch with their soul and becoming aware of their particular gift which they offer to this world. A keen gar-dener he exudes a sense of presence and deep listening. Peter believes in the power of ceremony and ritual which he uses to great effect in his work of empowerment and healing.

About Imogen O’Connor

Imogen O’Connor trained in Psychosynthe-sis and has worked as a psychotherapist since the 1990’s. She guides adults and teenagers to hear and follow the call of their deeper, mysterious natures, through the medium of dream work, art, voice, body awareness and movement. The shamanic tradition has helped inform her work, her relationship with nature and in particular, her most beloved infant woodland which sur-rounds her home at Rosie’s Cottage.

SPRING–A new beginning for our healing

SAT AND SUNDAY 25&26 March 2017

The breeze at dawn has something to tell you,

Don’t go back to sleep,

You must ask for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the door sill

Where the two worlds touch

The door is round and open.

Further to my last e mail concerning the days I intend to present on the four innate dimensions of human wholeness, I am now writing to summarise the first two day event focusing on the East facet.

This aspect of a well developed self is characterised by innocence, lightheartedness, and extroversion. When we lack these qualities, it can leave us as humourless, stress-filled, heavy and dull. Arrested development, social isolation, ruined relationships, missed opportunities are part of the underdeveloped part of this dimension of self.

However wholeness tells us that embracing brokedness is an integral part of life. Overwhelming emotions and intolerable situations we can experience as children manifest in adult life in the form of addictions and inability to stay with the suffering which normal life presents us with. Saturday will be devoted to exploring ways to develop and become aware of the great resources which lie within us.

On Sunday we will begin to embrace our darker side from this wholeness. We will be offered ways of using and cultivating our resources to begin to replace old routines with more healthy ways of being, positive habits of presence, self -encounter and mature action.

Weather permitting both days will be conducted in the outdoors, enjoying the mountains and ocean of this beautiful environment. Wilderness informs us that wholeness is not about perfection. Both days will include input, solo time, and an opportunity to share when apropriate. The exercises we do can be then used to practice and continue to use when at home. Confidentiality is stressed and we will take solace that we are not alone in our human condition.

PLEASE DRESS IN SEVERAL LAYERS INCLUDING WATERPROOF CLOTHING AND GOOD BOOTS. Please include lunch, a hot drink, a watch, notebook and pen in your ruck sack.

I include a booking form which you might use to book a place before Monday 20 March. I include a reminder of the pricing scheme. However if you have a problem with money please contact me and we can arrange a fee you can afford.

Introducion to Focusing… Finding The Wisdom Within

How often have you said ‘I know I should have listened to myself’ … but didn’t?  Most of us don’t know how to tune into those subtle, vague, mysterious, irrational ‘gut’ feelings that are hard to pin down and describe … let alone, understand.

Focusing is a gentle yet powerful process of inner knowing.  It invites us to pay attention to body feelings and learn from them.

This weekend course will provide an introduction to the skills of focusing which will help you gain clarity, peace of mind and peace of body.  Inner wisdom and emotional healing are two of the most important results of this skill.

If you are looking for a way to guide your life from the inside, to find a way of knowing what is right for you, without always having to look to outer authority or to other people’s opinions, then this workshop will be most welcome to you.

Previous workshop participants have said …

‘Focusing is connecting with my deepest truest self.  Now that I am learning to trust the process, I am discovering the wisdom that lies within. I had no idea this wisdom existed, or that I could access it so simply. It is like exploring a new world, within myself. I don’t have to fully understand it to know that the process of focusing helps me to change from the inside. I feel I’ve been handed a tool to make me healthier happier and more alive.’

‘For me the skill of focusing is listening to my gut and puts structure on a simple but powerful process. I’ve been using it alongside meditation as a way of getting a sense of where things are at and teasing out things I am not sure about.’

‘For over 40 years I listened to my head and became accustomed to thinking in a particular way.  Focusing is so completely different.  It centres me.  It provides the opportunity to listen to the quiet whisper that can simply drown out the louder, shouting voice in my head.  I have learned that the whisper is me, the true me.’

‘Through focusing I have discovered, deep within myself, a well of peace and calmness where I go to re-energize and get perspective.’

All workshop participants are invited, on completion of the two days, to join our Sligo focusing group, which meets monthly to support each other and establish focusing as a way of life.
